'Oceans on Fire' by Martin Granger

Published by RedDoor,

ISBN 978-1-910453-02-5

There is tremendous knowledge here of a topic most of us know only from the finished product.  Martin Granger, an experienced documentary film maker, uses his knowledge to give the reader a superb picture of the actual work of filming for a documentary.  His heroine is Nathalie Thompson who is commissioned to make a documentary on the ocean and climate change.  Change is certainly what Nathalie gets as she rushes from place to place pursuing interviews and film material.  Even the topic of her film changes as the situation gets increasingly complex.

There is a lot of technical language here - there is the nitty gritty of documentary production in reference to camera, sound, script, interviewing etc. and there are the technical aspects of oceanic research.  The pace of the story obviates the need for total understanding if you don't want to go into the scientific side.  A subtitle on the cover is  'Sabotage at Sea'  so that suggests some other aspects of the story.  Nathalie is an appealing heroine of the modern style - competent, clever, resourceful.  The other researcher, Nick Coburn, has multifarious skills and connections which help him to discover shady doings in high places.  The weaving together of film making, investigative journalism and oceanic engineering projects is exciting.  This is an intelligent thriller.

Jennifer Palmer Throughout my reading life crime fiction has been a constant interest; I really enjoyed my 15 years as an expatriate in the Far East, the Netherlands & the USA but occasionally the solace of closing my door to the outside world and sitting reading was highly therapeutic. I now lecture to adults on historical topics including Famous Historical Mysteries.
