This is strong stuff from the very beginning.  A severed female leg is delivered by courier to Robin, Cormoran Strike's secretary.  She has been using the office for parcels and therefore did not suspect anything amiss.  Robin's wedding is planned for several months ahead so she is getting wedding materials by mail.

Cormoran Strike is a PI and Robin has become involved in assisting with his investigations.  The business was doing well but the publicity surrounding the arrival of the leg has discouraged many clients.  This may well have been an intended consequence for the perpetrator of the atrocity.

Cormoran has several candidates in mind for this perpetrator and gradually we learn the back stories of his involvements with them and their horrific, violent crimes.  He and Robin are busy trying to find these men and then to see if they may have committed the crime.  The work to get identification of the victim adds, of course, to the complications of the story.

The story moves through the various areas of action including the preparations for Robin's wedding weaving together with great skill the disparate elements.  Eventually the twists and turns produce a series of explosive events.

A very exciting if viscerally gruesome read!

This is the third of Robert Galbraith's crime tales about Cormoran Strike and Robin.

Robert Galbraith is a pseudonym for J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series and The Casual Vacancy.

Jennifer Palmer Throughout my reading life crime fiction has been a constant interest; I really enjoyed my 15 years as an expatriate in the Far East, the Netherlands & the USA but occasionally the solace of closing my door to the outside world and sitting reading was highly therapeutic. I now lecture to adults on historical topics including Famous Historical Mysteries.
